A Country in Collapse, a New Hope for Safety and Relief
About Samaritan’s Purse
Named after the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37), which demonstrates the importance of helping those in desperate need, Samaritan’s Purse is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. Since 1970, Samaritan’s Purse has helped meet the needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing God’s love through His Son, Jesus Christ. The organization serves the Church worldwide to promote the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
For over 50 years, Samaritan’s Purse has done everything within its power to aid the world’s poor, sick, and suffering in the name of the Lord.
Since 2018, Samaritan's Purse has provided relief to hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan migrants seeking a new life in Colombia, as they escape political and economic instability. With more than 87% of the population living in poverty, this crisis has led to the largest displacement of people in Latin American history—that’s 4.5 million Venezuelans who have fled the country in search of the most basic goods and services. Many believe their country has lost all sense of democracy, and the increasing fear and effect of the current dictatorship are forcing people out in great waves. Those who have fled the country are often left without shelter and must sleep wherever they can find a safe place to do so, wherever that may be.
Five million Venezuelans have fled their homeland over the past several years due to hunger, a collapsing healthcare system, and an increase in violence which drives them to trade an unsafe situation for an uncertain one.
Spiritual Support, No Matter Your Background
Samaritan’s Purse is dedicated to offering relief from multiple locations—providing food, shelter, and medical care among other services across the border from Venezuela to Cucuta, Colombia. To serve this great need, the Centro de Esperanza was established, also known as the Hope Center or Center for Hope.
Thousands of refugees—men, women, and children—come to the Hope Center each week to find physical and spiritual relief from the political turmoil they are facing in their country. In fact, since June of 2018, more than 20,000 people have been guests at the Hope Center. It is a welcoming space for Venezuelan migrants to receive basic human services and support.
Thanks to the critical partnership between Samaritan’s Purse and a local Colombian church in Cucuta, the Hope Center is able to offer a variety of services, from spiritual help (regardless of religious background), psychological help, medical services, legal advice, food, shelter, or most of all, understanding and love. This partnership also allows Samaritan's Purse to minister to Venezuelan migrants of all ages and provide much-needed support and resources to them during difficult times.
Those who seek help from the Hope Center share so much in common. A failing economy has put their once thriving and beautiful nation in a painful place, and many are in need of necessary resources. Samaritan’s Purse recognized this need, and provide support.
Some migrants have moved to Cucuta, some only pass through, and some come only for the day to gather much needed food and commodities to return home with. But, regardless of their path, the Hope Center is there to be a shoulder to turn to and a shelter to comfort them.
What the Hope Center Has Offered Venezuelans
The Hope Center offers just that: hope. Many of the refugees who come to the center are seeking basic necessities or a place to rest. They deserve to be treated humanely and with care, while they hope for change in their country.
The Hope Center is a much-needed reprieve from the ruin they are leaving behind in the country they love the most. It’s an earth-shattering feeling to have to flee, but with the help and support of the volunteers at the Hope Center, Venezuelans are seeing that there truly is light at the end of the tunnel, and there are people who care about their safety and well-being, just across the border.
Help Us Support the Hope Center
With over five million Venezuelans who have fled the country in recent years, despite efforts like these to help improve the lives of those suffering, Venezuelans still continue to leave the country in waves.
Please consider donating to the Hope Center to help support their mission.
